The Campaign to save the Baths

Local people tried to stop the Baths being closed in 1988, but to no avail.

The campaign to save the Baths began in earnest in 1994, after the LDDC contract was up. People began to be concerned that the Baths would not reopen.

Local charity SPLASH gathered petitions for the reopening of the Baths. SPLASH also commissioned a feasibility study, and came up with a plan for the Baths. For various reasons and despite pressure and interest from the community, the Baths still remained closed.

The Poplar Baths Steering Group was formed in February 2003

After a series of unsuccessful public meetings, the Poplar Baths Steering Group of local residents was formed. The Steering Group campaigns for a new pool for the Poplar community. It has organised meetings, petitions, and approached various organisations to try and find a way to bring new life to Poplar Baths In 2004, the Steering Group approached the Environment Trust. The Environment Trust, Swan Housing Association and SPLASH have come up with what we believe is a viable plan to regenerate Poplar Baths.
